چکیده

One requirement by which virtual environments (VEs) are judged, is the believability of the virtual agents (VAs). One aspect of believability, is that agent responses to situations should not create cognitive dissonance and thereby distract the observer. One approach to this problem is the use of institutional models, in conjunction with classical AI techniques, to achieve the appropriate recognition of complex situations and provide guidance on the subsequent choice of action(s). We present a distributed approach in which externally governed normaware agents are used to control the performance of the VE characters, creating the capacity to improve both the effectiveness of the decision-making and the believability of the characters. We aim to show that the combination of an institution providing social reasoning and BDI agents providing individual reasoning, establishes a framework for enhancing believability by the interplay between: (i) the institution and IVAs in VEs, and (ii) norms maintained by the institution and the mental states of IVAs. From an engineering point of view, the framework provides a separation of concerns because the BDI agent is augmented with the capacity to process social obligations, while the specification and verification of social structure resides in the (possibly several) institutional models. We illustrate our approach with two scenarios: one on queuing and another on inter-personal distance theory.

A Framework for Institutions Governing Institutions

Norms guide multi-agent systems away from being potentially anarchic towards a coordinated and collaborative society. Institutions provide an explicit, external representation of norms as well as the means to detect violations and other conditions. Each institution can be crafted individually to capture their designers’ goals, but this creates a challenge at higher levels of authority in guidin...

Designing Institutional Multi-Agent Systems

The vision of agents working together on the Internet, in virtual organizations, is one that is increasingly common. However, one of the issues is the regulation of the participating agents and their behaviour. A substantial body of work exists that investigates agent societies and agent organizations, including work on electronic institutions, such as Islander and Ameli. However, although such...

Formalizing an electronic institution for the distribution of human tissues

The use of multi-agent systems (MAS) in health-care domains is increasing. Such agent-mediated medical systems can manage complex tasks and have the potential to adapt gracefully to unexpected events. However, in these kinds of systems the issues of privacy, security and trust are particularly sensitive in relation to matters such as agents' access to patient records, what is acceptable behavio...

Embodied Tour Guide in an Interactive Virtual Art Gallery

The technology of embodied conversational agents in virtual worlds provides an attractive way to achieve natural and realistic human-computer interaction if the interaction design is handled sensitively. In view of this, we aim at building an embodied tour guide that is able to engage conversationally with system users about gallery exhibits, and capable of behaving according to social norms in...

Human agency beliefs influence behaviour during virtual social interactions

In recent years, with the emergence of relatively inexpensive and accessible virtual reality technologies, it is now possible to deliver compelling and realistic simulations of human-to-human interaction. Neuroimaging studies have shown that, when participants believe they are interacting via a virtual interface with another human agent, they show different patterns of brain activity compared t...
